The Newcomers

Wood, Metal, Household Items, Four People, One Plaza, Ten Days, 15' x 16' x 200', 2017.

Our goal was for four people to cross the Chase Manhattan plaza in downtown New York without leaving or touching the ground. Alex and Ward, with collaborators Lena Kouvela and Sarah Burns, performed this 10-day round-the-clock trek by living in a moving camp on stilts. During the day the artists construct a bridge with camp materials, making progress along their path (marked by numbered flags). By night they use the same materials to re-build a house to sleep in. All their supplies and necessities travel with them, creating a slow nomadic migration across a neighborhood dense with foot traffic, exposed to all passers-by. A significant amount of time and energy is devoted to conversation and questions with the steady flow of visitors.

This project was generously supported by both B&O Play and Performa 17.
