Flatland

Various Construction Materials, Household Appliances, 6 People 2’ x 32’ x 24’, 3 Weeks, 2007.

Flatland’s extended durational performance at New York’s SculptureCenter points to a fundamental aspect of architecture: the reciprocal relationship between subject and object, between people and buildings. We choose and shape our buildings; then they shape us. This flat-screen-like sculpture visibly displayed 6 people’s lives over 3 weeks. The rules are simple, if you go out you cannot come back in, so cope. Establishing a community within these spatial constraints set a steep learning curve for social behaviors and a trajectory for our work to come.
